Protective styling and natural hair go together like peanut butter and jelly! I have yet to find a natural haired person who hasn’t experimented with, and/or fallen in love with protective styling their natural hair. In my case, I love it!
There’s some debate as to whether or not protective styling can actually aide in natural hair growth, or whether that’s a myth. But in my case, length retention isn’t the only reason I enjoy protective styling. Another reason for me is the fact that it gives me a break from my coils, kinks and curls! And if you’re natural, then you know how much work naturally curly or kinky hair can be. Sometimes you just get burnt out with wash day and styling All. The. Time. (insert Charlie Brown scream!)
Protective Styling Ideas:
There are many options when it comes to protective styling,
- Box Braids
- Crochet Braids
- Mini Twists
- Wearable Two-Strand Twists (which I would love to rock, but have yet to master)
This list could go on and on…
The Purpose of Protective Styling – Length Retention
The main objective when it comes to protective styling is to keep the ends of our hair tucked or pinned away in some fashion. Since our ends are the oldest part of our hair, they tend to get dry quicker, as well as break faster. Protecting our ends is where length retention comes in. The better we protect our hair, the less breakage and unnecessary hair loss we’ll have, which in turn will allow us to see greater lengths for our hair.
How I Protect my Natural Hair
I have experimented with protective styling in a few different ways, but my most favorite happens to be the Twisted Halo of Flat twists. It’s just so classy, chic and most importantly… SIMPLE to do. It can be done on wet or dry hair, though I’ve gotten the best results on blow dried or stretched hair, since it allows for more volume; instead of literal flat flat twists.
Starting off with freshly washed, and blow dried or stretched hair; I moisturize with whatever moisturizer is my favorite at the time and then I follow up with The Mane Choice – It Doesn’t Get Much Butter Than This. This hair butter helps me to achieve really soft, shiny and moisturized hair. I always get the best results when I use this butter for my flat twists.
